Civil Society Organizations crucial in promoting democracy

Civil Society Organizations have been underpinned as vital role players in promoting democracy in the country given their vast direct connection to society.

The European Union Deputy Head of Mission, Gosia Lachut said this during the European Union and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung training of over 200 members of the Civil Society Organisations from four Northern Communal Areas, the Omusati, Ohangwena, Kavango East and West regions.

She emphasised the importance of Civil Society in democracies adding that such organisations play a crucial role in promoting democracy, human rights, and good governance.

“I believe that with the newly acquired knowledge, you will make a positive impact in your communities, and amplify the voice of the voiceless,” she said.

Meanwhile, Natalie Russman, Resident Representative of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung noted the project will contribute to a vibrant and gendered democracy through the effective participation of women in civic life in Namibia.

The capacity-building training sessions were hosted under the EU and co-funded by KAS under the “Strengthening the Roles of CSOs and Women in Democracy” project, implemented over a 39-month period in partnership with Women Action for Development (WAD).

She urged women to take the bull by its horns and use opportunities that represent themselves and makes an impact in society.

In addition, she emphasised that women are equally capable of being a force to be reckoned with, particularly in a world that is heavily dominated by men.

She stressed that stereotypes and beliefs should not impede women from realising their full potential.

Moreover, given the evolving world of technology, women have been given a plethora of dynamics to venture into and should therefore awaken their inner genius to spearhead Namibia into a better world where young girls and boys can both compete without having to be limited due to stereotypes.
