A new Memorandum of Agreement between the Walvis Bay Municipality, the Road Fund Administration (RFA), and the Road Authority (RA) will inject almost N$250 million into the project to repair and maintain the port city’s streets.
In an announcement, the port city’s municipality said the RFA has committed N$248 million as part of the tripartite agreement over the next five years.
During the signing ceremony the Chief Executive Officer of the RFA, Ali Ipinge said the N$248 million which is derived from the Road User Charges, will be used for the rehabilitation and widening of municipal roads leading to Walvis Bay’s port facilities.
“The new agreement will ensure added support to the national vision of promoting the national road corridors and logistical hub ideals as enshrined in Namibia’s Vision 2030 development plans,” he said.
Mayor of Walvis Bay, Trevino Forbes said the MoA represents a significant step forward in ensuring that roads are upgraded and that safety and accessibility to the town are enhanced.
“Following an ever-escalating stream of complaints by motorists about the bad condition of the streets, our Acting Chief Executive arranged a meeting with the RFA in January 2023. The positive outcome of that meeting led to the signing of the new agreement,” Forbes said.
The port city’s mayor expressed the hope that the expertise and technical support that can be provided by the RFA and RA will accelerate the much-needed repair and maintenance work on crucial infrastructure.
