Namibia has done well in terms of women’s representation, with a representation of women that is just under 50 percent, according to National Assembly Speaker Peter Katjavivi.
“We have done well in terms of women and youth representation. Women representation is just below 50 percent and was achieved mainly because of the zebra strategy adopted by the ruling party. We also have quite a number of young people in both parliament and high-level government structures. We were hoping that we could liaise with the Angolan parliament to share experiences and strengthen our cooperation and we look forward to the country hosting us during the IPU General Assembly”, said Katjavivi
Katjavivi said this yesterday during his meeting with Angola’s Ambassador to Namibia, Jovelina Imperial Costa.
Costa paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the National Assembly where the two expressed the need for close collaboration, given the existing historical ties.
Additionally, Katjavivi noted during the meeting that Namibia and Angola enjoyed excellent bilateral relations that date back to the time of the liberation struggle when countless Namibians were hosted by that country for fear of persecution.
Costa echoed similar sentiments adding that Namibia and Angola are connected through historical ties. She further revealed that plans were afoot to organise a celebration of Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) in Windhoek on the 5 of May 2023 and extended an invitation to the Speaker as a guest of honour.
Angola chairs CPLP, a multilateral forum that was created in 1996 with the aim to promote mutual friendship and cooperation between member countries. Namibia is among 19 observer countries.
