The appointment of Swapo Councilor, Sam Nujoma as Chairperson of the City of Windhoek Management Committee has paved the way for the appointment of a chief executive officer for the City of Windhoek.
Nujoma’s appointment was announced last Friday by the City’s spokesperson, Harold Akwenye and it as a crucial step forward for the Council to make progress in filling the vacant position. Akwenye said the Council will soon decide on the way forward regarding the CEO’s appointment.
After a stern rebuke from Magistrate Venatius Alweendo, who presided over a special meeting last week, Council appointed Nujoma. Alweendo told the councillors at the City of Windhoek to “stop behaving like children” when they attempted to stir up a debate around the election and nomination process.
This was during the voting and filling of two vacant positions on the Council Management Committee, for which Affirmative Repositioning (AR) member, Job Amupanda and Ivan Skrywer of the Landless People’s Movement (LPM) were voted.
The City has been in a mess after some councilors failed to attend meetings called by the Council to elect the two members of the Management Committee. This has left many residents feeling that the Council is failing in its responsibility to manage the City. It is reported that many urgent matters were supposed to have been discussed by the Council but could not since the Management Committee did not have a chairperson.
Nujoma did not respond to questions sent to him.
