President of the Popular Democratic Movement McHenry Venaani has appealed to the business fraternity across the country to render assistance to effected members of the public who have been directly affected by the recent floods.
In December last year flooding damaged buildings and swept away vehicles in the Windhoek, after 3 months’ worth of rain fell in 24 hours.
Several buildings were damaged, including a Police Station in Otjomuise and the Wernhill Park shopping centre.
Windhoek recorded 95 mm of rain fell in 24 hours that day.
“In this respect, the Leader of the Official Opposition, the Honourable McHenry Venaani appeals to the business fraternity across the country to render assistance to inundated members of the public who have been directly affected by this natural disaster to express a consolidated and integrated response.
“While it is too early to predict the impact on agricultural production across the northern region in particular, crops are currently in their peak growing and development period ahead of the April/May harvest. Therefore, should the effects of the floods go by unaddressed, it has the potential to exacerbate food insecurity,” said Venaani.
Meanwhile earlier heavy rain fell in the ǁKaras. The settlement of Aroab recorded 37.6mm of rain between 10 and 11 December, and 31mm of rain between 11 and 12 December.
Additionally, long-term heavy rainfall in the northern has caused flooding in areas of southern Angola and across the border in Namibia.
Moreover, Venaani called upon the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) to facilitate any donations and assistance rendered to the affected communities, from a humanitarian interventionist standpoint.
