The completion of two hostel blocks and a kitchen for hostel dwellers to the Oshamukweni Combined School 34km outside Okongo in the Ohangwena Region at the Shalumbu village has come at a time when enrolment numbers at the remote school is rising.
This was said by the principal of the school Werner Nangolo at the handover of the hostel and ablution blocks last weekend.
Kalahari Holdings build the hostel blocks and the ablution facility, while a US company, Footsteps for Africa provided the kitchen.
The morale of the teachers and learners at the school are high following the handover of two hostel blocks for the boys and girls accommodating more than 60 learners and an ablution facility.
Kalahari Holding’s marketing manager, Tuuliki Nelulu said 90 percent of the company’s social responsibility budget is allocated towards educational needs.
The donation came about after video clips made rounds on social media last year showing the deplorable conditions under which learners of Oshamukweni Combined School were accommodated.
A parent teacher from a different school came to enrol her child at the school and after witnessing the conditions at the
School hostel, she took pictures and disseminated them on social media platforms.
These images attracted national outcry and the Governor of the region immediately gave priority attention to the matter.
The new school hostel blocks were handed over by Martin Inkumbi, chairperson of the Kalahari Holdings board.
The Governor of Ohangwena Region, Walde Ndevashiya welcomed the donation and thanked all the stakeholders who were involved.
Inkumbi said the company is always looking for ways to improve the lives of the future generations
as well as the development of education in the country.
