At least eleven cases of minor rape incidents have been reported in the Omusati Region from the beginning of the year. The ages of the victims range from as young as two years to 13 years.
According to regional investigations coordinator, deputy commissioner Simaho Moses these Incidents result from negligence when it comes to taking care of children and leaving them unattended or with strangers.
‘’This kind of crime occurs children are left alone in the house or with neighbours. We embarked on awareness from there we will hold parents or guardians responsible according to Child Care and Protection Act,’’ he explained.
One of these incidents occurred on Tuesday 31 May 2022 at about 12h00 at Omufituwanauyala village Anamulenge Constituency during a – year-old learner at Omufitu kindergarten was allegedly raped by Asser Mpinge, a 17-year-old boy, who is domestic worker.
According to the police, Mpinge had visited the neighbours house with the victim. Upon their return home the complained about pain between her legs.
Her mother Rakel Heita then reported the incident to the police and the suspect was arrested and appeared before the Outapi Magistrate Court.
Most of the rape cases according to statistics from the police occurred between the months of February and May, both accounting for three cases each.
Meanwhile, January, March and June all recorded one case each, with the month of April reporting two cases.
Las year alone, a total of 69 rape cases were reported in the region.
